The Green Deal Under Scrutiny: The Awareness Campaign by Europiamo and GeCo

In an era where the ecological transition is frequently reduced to slogans or polarized debates, the need for accessible, rigorous, and above all, critical information has become paramount. Driven by this urgency, Europiamo and GeCo joined forces in Italy to launch an awareness and information campaign on Instagram dedicated to the European Green Deal. Through a strategic mini-series of three posts, the collaboration aimed to look beneath the surface of institutional communication, equipping their community with the tools to understand the real status, challenges, and contradictions of the European Union’s environmental policies.

The educational journey was divided into three macro-themes, each explored with a distinct graphic and analytical style designed to stimulate critical thinking among young citizens.

The first post set the general framework, deconstructing and presenting the foundations of the Green Deal. Citizens often perceive European treaties as a distant set of regulations; the objective of this content was to explain the tangible impact of Brussels’ roadmaps on daily life instead. With a clear-eyed perspective, the post highlighted not only the ambitious carbon neutrality targets but also began to raise the first questions regarding the actual feasibility of the timelines and the resources allocated.

The second post dove into the heart of the critical analysis, addressing one of the most complex knots of the transition: balancing environmental sustainability with economic and social sustainability. Europiamo and GeCo analyzed how green policies are impacting different Member States and productive sectors. The approach was far from celebratory; rather, it focused on highlighting the political tensions and industrial resistance that are slowing down or altering Europe’s ecological agenda. This offered the audience a transparent overview of the forces at play behind the scenes of community decisions.

Finally, the third post projected the debate into the future, examining the current state of the art and the crucial next steps for Europe. In this concluding content, the focus shifted to the active role of citizens and youth movements in monitoring that institutional promises translate into concrete actions. The post analyzed future scenarios, leaving the community with an open question about the direction the European Union truly intends to take in the face of escalating climate crises.

The strength of this campaign lay precisely in how the topic was presented. By avoiding “greenwashing” and the complexity of overly bureaucratic language, Europiamo and GeCo successfully translated intricate concepts into visually striking, immediate, yet data-rich Instagram carousels. The audience was encouraged not to passively consume information, but to develop their own informed opinions. This project stands as proof that social networks can be transformed into genuine spaces for civic education and informed activism.
